About the Book

Since the morning of the industrial age, companies have been immersed in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for the competitive benefit, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet, as this influential and enormously popular book shows, these hallmarks of competitive strategy of fight or submit are not the way to establish profitable growth in the future.

In the international bestseller Blue Ocean Strategy, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne argue that cutthroat game results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over an introverted profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves (spanning more than 100 years across 30 industries), the authors argue that story of success comes not from battling competitors. Still, industries creating "blue oceans"—untapped new market spaces ripe for ex-rival Spansion. Such strategic moves, which the authors call “value innovation,” make powerful leaps in value that often render obsolete for more than a decade.

Blue Ocean Strategy illustrates a systematic strategy to making the competition irrelevant and outlines beliefs and tools any company can use to establish and capture their blue oceans. This bestselling business book charts a bold modern path to winning the future, a landmark work that upends traditional thinking about policy and the story of success.
