What is Holacracy?

 

Holacracy is a method of decentralized management and organizational governance, in which authority and decision-making are distributed throughout a holarchy of self-organizing teams rather than being vested in a management hierarchy.

Companies are adopting the top-down hierarchy and favor decentralized management models. Zappos, Medium, AirBnB, Uber and other famous companies are striking examples of successful Holacracy system implementation. The adoption of this fresh model made them more flexible, adaptable and responsive to change.

Holacracy is claimed to increase agility, efficiency, transparency, innovation and accountability within an organization. The approach encourages individual team members to take initiative and gives them a process in which their concerns or ideas can be addressed.

 

What kind of change will Holacracy bring to your organization?

 

There are four differences between a traditional hierarchical structure and a holacratic organization that are most striking.

 

1. No more functions: from functions to roles.

2. No more boss: from delegated authority to distributed authority.
