We usually see vending machines providing items like snacks, beverages, cigarettes, and lottery tickets to consumers after cash, credit card or, or a specially designed card is inserted into the machines. But a vending machine at the airport in Oakland, Calif., is distributing Covid-19 test kits.
There are two machines, each one located within both of Oakland’s terminals. You have to make a selection on the screen and reach down to pick up your choice. The tests carry a significantly higher price tag (about $149), but the test’s cost can be submitted to insurance later for reimbursement. You will not get an instant result as it is a take-home Saliva RT-PCT test. Customers must take their own test and return a saliva sample by FedEx, and they will receive the results through a mobile app.
The test kit is designed by the digital health company, ‘Wellness 4 Humanity’, and the vending machines are produced by Swyft. The covid-19 fear is still there and even with the testing option available, Bryant Francis, Oakland Aviation Director, is encouraging travelers to make sure they are current on any quarantines and regulations at their destinations.

According to Los Angeles Times, the kits are intended for people flying into Oakland and not for those who are about to board a plane. Airport officials also said that travelers headed to Hawaii cannot use the vending machine tests as part of the State of Hawaii Department of Health’s pre-travel testing program which requires travelers entering Hawaii to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure.
By introducing this technology, Oakland International Airport became the first airport to begin selling Covid-19 tests from vending machines.
