Warren Gamaliel Bennis (March 8, 1925 – July 31, 2014) was regarded as a pioneer of the contemporary field of Leadership studies. During his gigantic and effective career, he was a student soldier, scholar, university provost, university president, student of leadership and group dynamics and distinguished professor. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for serving the U.S. Army during the outbreak of World War II in 1943 as one of the youngest platoon leaders in Europe.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business in 1951 from Antioch College in Ohio, later he was an honorary member of the Antioch College Board of Trustees. He got his post-graduate and doctorate degree from Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) under the mentorship of Paul A. Samuelson, Franco Modigliani and Robert M. Solow, all of whom were later awarded the Nobel Prize in economic science.
After the completion of his PhD in 1955, he spent his time teaching at MIT, Harvard University, and Boston University, along with that he turned out to be an advisor to four United States presidents and several other public figures. Also, he served as chairman of the Advisory Board of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University's Kennedy School. He was a guest lecturer of leadership at the University of Exeter (UK) and a senior fellow at UCLA's School of Public Policy and Social Research.
He was called one of ten business school professors who have had the greatest influence on business thinking by BusinessWeek in 2007.
