Apple has always been in the headlines, be it the hacking of devices through iMessage or trying hands in new technology; the brand is always ahead of technology. This time Apple has again hit the headlines. According to the report, Apple will launch its mixed reality device in the coming year.
Bloomberg’s, Award-winning journalist, Mark Gurman, penned in his latest edition of the Power on newsletter," Apple’s first headset will be of the mixed reality variety. That means it will have both AR and VR capabilities. While gaming can be done in both environments, virtual reality is what you want for seriously high-performance games with top-tier graphics. For Apple’s first headset, that’s what it’s shooting for: a mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality with snappy chips and high-end displays.”
He further added that “The headset or Apple Glasses will have both Augmented Reality(AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
What is Augmented Reality (AR)?
Right now, Augmented Reality (AR) is considered one of the biggest technology trends. It will only get bigger as AR-ready smartphones and other devices become more accessible worldwide.
AR helps to see the real-life environment right in front. For example, kids playing in the garden, dogs chasing balls, etc. The most recent example of AR technology is the mobile app Pokemon Go. The game was released in 2016 and instantly became a sensation.
AR Glasses and Apple
It is said that Apple is working on two AR projects that include an augmented reality headset and sleeker pair of augmented reality glasses. However, it is rumored that the brand is solely focusing on the AR smart glasses now. The headset is based on virtual reality, while Apple’s glasses are based on augmented reality.
Ming-Chi Kuo said, “ Apple’s upcoming mixed reality headset will feature 15 optical camera modules in total. Eight of the 15 camera modules will be used for a see-through augmented reality experience, six modules will be used for “innovation biometrics,” and one camera module will be used for environmental detection.”
Kuo further added,” Apple’s headset will be equipped with an advanced eye-tracking system used to provide an intuitive visual experience that interacts seamlessly with the external environment, along with more intuitive operation that can be controlled with eye movements and reduced computational burden in the form of a reduced resolution where the user is not looking.”
AR Glasses at WWDC?
Before you get confused, WWDC stands for Worldwide Developers Conference. The stock analyst, Gene Munster, believes that Apple will launch the headset in June at WWDC.
Munster told Investor’s Business Daily, “Apple normally waits until someone has been in the market for a couple of years before they enter. But in this case, the stakes around developers and the metaverse and how it comes together are too high to wait."
Augmented Reality( AR) Vs. Virtual Reality(VR)
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are similar technologies, but there are some differences between the two and their usage is significantly different. Virtual reality refers to a completely immersive experience in the virtual world, whereas Augmented reality refers to a modified view of the real world. Perhaps the best way to deduce the difference is to compare AR and VR.
Google Glass, Google's non-existent smart glasses, is an example of augmented reality. The eye-catching Google Glass allows users to see the world as it is but features an initial view that overlays relevant computer-generated information on top of these real-world views such as local time, maps, and notifications.
On the other hand, Facebook's Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that provides an immersive visual experience that adds no additional sensory information to the real world - it completely replaces the real world with a simulated world.
Apple always manages to take strong steps towards technical development. Even iPhone is termed as safe to use smartphone. There is no debate that Apple’s AR smart glasses are one of the anticipated products, but we have to wait for its launch to see the utility of the product. It is said that the product will be available for purchase in late 2022 or likely to be 2023.
