Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care”. – Theodore Roosevelt

Before discussing the importance of empathy in leadership, let us know what empathy means:

Daniel Goleman, the author of the book Emotional Intelligence, says that empathy is the ability to understand others’ emotions.

Types of Empathy

Cognitive Empathy

It is the ability to understand how a person is feeling and what they might be thinking. It makes us better communicator by helping us deliver the information in a way that best reaches the other person.

Future of leadership is Empathy?

Studies carried out by Development Dimensions International (DDI) proves that empathy is the biggest single leadership skill needed today.

With the increase in the feeling of hatred for one other, it is very important to understand the feelings of others, build a connection and act accordingly especially when it comes to leadership. We can not make a good leader with a lack of empathy.

Being empathetic allows leaders to help struggling employees improve and excel. When you understand the problems faced by your employees and solve them, their trust in you increases and it strengthens the relationship between employees and leaders, thus pushing them to do their best for you.

Empathy creates bonds, it also shows that you care, value and understands others. It help leaders understand the root cause of problems and work accordingly. When your team feels like they are valued, cared, appreciated, they become more productive. It gives them a sense of not being just an employee, but an individual that you have affection for.
