Becoming a writer just doesn't mean that you need to write books and articles that are published to the masses through big publication houses. But being a writer is also a service that businesses need content for branding and marketing. Web 3.0 has opened a plethora of opportunities for writers of all kinds, types, and languages. And this is how you can be a writer for Web 3.0 platforms -

Web 3.0 Explained

First things first, what is Web 3.0? Or what was Web 2.0? Or even what is the Web we are talking about here?

The most basic definition of the Web is that it is called the internet. The Web is also called the World Wide Web or “www” as we see it at the beginning of every web address. The internet as we know was founded initially on a university campus where the range was only a few miles but eventually, the internet grew its potential and has a global range reaching various remote areas too.

So summing it up, the first version of the Web which is also called Web 1.0 was when your desktops were connected to the internet.

Later, a newer version of the Web came into existence which is Web 2.0 wherein, in layman's terms, your phones became smart and mobiles were connected to the internet. This also includes the rise of the very first social media websites like MySpace, Facebook, etc. Furthermore, there are also writing platforms like Medium. In case, you'd like to try writing for Web 2.0, try these 10 tips to succeed at Medium.

The Web 2.0 platforms and applications sometimes use cloud storage. You can learn about Cloud Computing and Governance here. Though some of the applications based on Web 2.0 are also offline and use the internet as and when it's available, it all depends on the permissions set by the user and the developer.

Five major features of Web 2.0:

  • Users are permitted to freely sort information, retrieve, and classify the information collectively.

  • Dynamic content that is responsive to user input.

  • Information flows between the site owner and site users by means of evaluation & online commenting.

  • Furthermore, developed APIs allow self-usage, such as by a software application in the Web 2.0 platform.

  • Web access leads to concerns different, from the traditional Internet user base to a wider variety of users.

The following things were also on the rise with Web 2.0 -

  • Podcasting

  • Blogging

  • Tagging

  • Curating with RSS

  • Social bookmarking

  • Social networking

  • Social media

  • Web content voting

And moving ahead with the evolution of the internet Web 3.0 is built on top of the blockchain. Blockchain enables trust. With blockchain, the internet slowly transforms from centralized to decentralized.

A decentralized Web 3.0 is owned and governed by the users and not by big tech companies. Therefore, the internet doesn't run for or because of the company but for the users. Web 3.0 is basically built on Ethereum.

You have us the internet users. We use apps on our phones. Those apps then connect to Ethereum. Previously, many layers sat underneath the apps you use on your phone, like ‘the cloud.’ Not anymore. Ethereum replaces all of that and more. Decentralization also means “No permission is needed from a central authority to post anything on the web, there is no central controlling node, and so no single point of failure...and no ‘kill switch’! This also implies freedom from indiscriminate censorship and surveillance.”

Web 3.0 and Democracy

Proponents of Web 3.0 believe it could reinvigorate democratic values at both the internet level and the societal level. It is argued that the Web 3.0 iteration of the internet will be structurally more democratic and free than what came before. The “one person, one vote” principle of equal representation would supposedly be built into Web 3.0’s very design with a token model used to power its applications.

How Can You Write For Web 3.0?

There are various web platforms on Web 3.0 that allow you to write and sell your articles just like NFTs. Check out the list of Web 3.0 platforms that suit writers -

GM literally means “Good Morning” and is a place where people share their Good Morning thoughts. These thoughts are short sentences that are sold just the cryptos are sold. This platform has an inbuilt monetization system that becomes an asset for writers.

2. Minds dot com

Minds is a platform that pays users according to the traffic on their paywall. Big Tech seeks to “ban misinformation and offensive speech because it’s dividing society.”

Mirror is again a platform where you can sell your articles just the way people sell their NFTs and make money. Their main focus right now is sharing writing that helps users raise money for startups/projects — a glorified crowdfunding platform. Often these platforms are directly connected to your crypto wallet instead of your email address. According to the company, “On Mirror, you aren't the product, you are the owner.”

4. DESO

Deso was also called the Bitclout. Initially, content creators could launch their own stock or cryptocurrency and eventually monetize it. “Turn yourself into a tradable stock to experiment” was the whole summary of Deso.

Making money on DESO:

  1. Diamond ‘likes’ from users are worth money

  2. Turn your content into NFTs and sell it

  3. Sell your crypto to investors/fans

5. Orbis

This platform uses pen names or anonymous usernames for writers or users in general. Orbis can also be looked at to be a decentralized version of Twitter.

The Conclusion

The platforms on Web 3.0 have opened an arena of immense opportunities that come without any restriction. Thes platforms have also started monetizing what was the intangible product like an article, a picture, a thought, etc.

For writers, this opens a wide market to sell their words without having to write a whole book or an article. The Web 3.0 platforms may look complicated but in reality, is highly simple in the terms of use. They are also free of any government restrictions and prevailing laws in the region which makes them more user-friendly. Though it is highly advisable to be cautious while you connect your crypto wallets to any platform.

Many Web3 writing platforms allow you to create a DAO (Decentralized autonomous organization). The goal for many of you is to write and make money. Web3.0 writing platforms will help you do that as they become more evolved.

Today writers face a lot of competition due to the huge number of existing and established writers. But on Web 3.0 platforms, they are still early and once you are onboard, you become more and more experienced in the next big thing of the future. Therefore, be the early bird that catches the worm and make your mark on the Web 3.0 platforms.

Personally I have been on most of the platforms mentioned here. Some of them are great but I feel it doesn't include one of the best web3 platforms right now. I have been using it the past few months and all looks fluid on a web3 platform. If you are curious enough check out . On top of everything, it also offers substack like monetization features.
