But we should realize that yoga can support mental wellness too.

Shruti Bhatia is 26 years old, a self-employed and successful Yoga Instructor from Punjab. She completed her certifications in yoga and meditation from Punjab university. As a professional yoga instructor, Shruti says, “The graceful nature of yoga is the most complimentary thing for her practice and teachings”. To her, yoga is an essential part of mental and spiritual maintenance. Her goal is to make people understand that yoga is just beyond physical fitness. She hopes that people can be empowered, peaceful, and grounded by taking her yoga practices.
When she was looking for the best ways to heal, yoga is a wonderful discovery that supports mental and physical discipline for herself. After witnessing the power of yoga that changed her life, she took all the courage to let others benefit from it. Then, she introduced yoga to thousands of students who were new to this healing art. She also has hosted many online and offline yoga sessions, Shruti’s classes are challenging, fun, and make people shine in their own light.
How did "Yoga with shruti start?" and what do you enjoy about being a yoga instructor?
I started doing yoga at home for my fitness. Later, I realized there is more to yoga. As I love to learn new things, I searched for my options. And I found that there is a course in yoga and meditation at Panjab University. Then, I completed my certification after six months of training. At this point, I wanted more people to know about the benefits of yoga. This is how I started “Yoga with shruti’.
Most of us are new to yoga practices, can you tell why we should include yoga in our life?
Yoga is basically your physical fitness and mental fitness. All these matter to you the most, “Life is more valuable than anything else. If you survive, you can conquer the world’. For this, I always say yoga can help you to strengthen mental, physical and emotional stability. It will help your body to get a peaceful mind, and there are many other benefits of yoga. Some of them are increasing flexibility, improving strength, mental health, heart health and many more. For example, if we take the work from home scenario, people are sitting in front of laptops for hours and hours. Due to this, people are facing issues like Physical sickness, Poor sleep, stress, and anxiety. According to research by Time of India in 2021, “82% of the Indian population is struggling from managing stress and anxiety. Yoga not only helps to maintain physical fitness, but also helps in stabilizing mental wellness. Once you practice Meditation and Asanas, you’ll realize that you can handle rough patches very calmly and easily. That’s why I encourage people to include yoga in their daily life. At Least you can do the meditation for 5-10 minutes daily, it will also help you for the good.
You are hosting various new challenges online, is it to interact with followers or any reasons behind it?
I have been hosting challenges, it’s a great way for me to meet people around the world. It helps me to grow my community of yoga and provide knowledge of it. Basically, it helps me to interact with people. I learned this from my yoga certifications that people will enjoy activities that are creative and fun. All these challenges are not just practicing asanas, it is also about Chakras, Mudras and elements of yoga. My challenges will be related to heart openers, hip openers, and many other things in a fun-filled way.
In one of your posts, you shared that yoga cures depression, can you explain it?
Depression is always there, in recent times, only people started to talk about it more. Especially during the Covid lockdown, depression was the real struggle of many of us. However, depression can’t be cured, but you can always practice meditation to help yourself. Like, Yoga Nidra is the best thing in meditation, that we practiced in our online yoga session. Many of my clients have asked for offline sessions, but in times of this Covid, I take only online classes. First, online sessions are always challenging at the beginning. Then, we managed to get the best outcome, many of my clients were satisfied and got cured of stress by doing meditation. I will say, “just calm down your mind and relax”.
Can you share with us any life-changing feedback you got from a client?
Yes, I have received a lot of feedback from my clients. Some of my clients were facing Cervical spondylosis. I helped them with yoga, now they are very much free from cervical pains. Likewise, many female clients were suffering from PCOD, and now they are doing yoga on a daily basis. They have given me the feedback that PCOD is not recurring with them. And it's very helpful for them, as the major problems of PCOD is weight gain and hair loss. Yoga has helped them to lose weight, and maintain a normal menstrual cycle. Also, I have helped my clients to overcome depression, insomnia, and breathing problems like asthma.
As a woman entrepreneur, how difficult is it to follow your passion?
Honestly, I haven't faced so much difficulty in following my passion. My family is very supportive, and they always motivated me. In our society, I find many yoginis, and they’re very inspiring to me. But I do feel that there has always been a resistance for women entrepreneurs. The only way to change is by creating more and more success stories. I'm hoping to gain success and inspire other women entrepreneurs.
How gender inequalities are affecting our society?
Gender inequality is not a new thing for our society, it’s coming from ages. It is one of the biggest problems in our society, and it leads to fewer opportunities for women. Even still, female infanticide exists in some states of India, if females are not born in this world. All these issues are very harmful to females in our society. The discrimination starts right from childbirth, we have to understand that women and men are equal first. God has created both equal, but we humans only create this inequality. I always wish more women should come forward and more women entreprenuers should get the opportunity.
As a female Yoga instructor, do you find any challenges while giving sessions to a male client?
All my clients are very good, they understand and respect the way I teach. I haven’t faced any issues with my male clients.
