What is a low FODMAP diet?

A low FODMAP diet is a temporary eating pattern that has a very low amount of food compounds called FODMAPS. Its acronym says to eat foods that have a low content of: 


  • Fermentable

Foods that are broken by bacteria in the large bowel. 


  • Oligosaccharides 

Oligo means few and saccharide means sugar. Avoid food that has molecules made up of individual sugars that are joined together in a chain in your diet. 


  • Disaccharides  

Avoiding foods that have double sugar molecules. 


  • Monosaccharides 

Single sugar molecule foods should also be avoided while adapting to the low FODMAP diet. 


  • Polyols 

Sugar alcohols, though not intoxicants, should be avoided. 



This diet is useful for those suffering from:

  • Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder 
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth 
  • Frequent migraines that appear to be triggered after certain meals

The conception of the Idea 

It all started back in the 1990s when President Clinton was serving his second term. Doing a business was always in Steven’s mind. Steven was planning to start a business with his friend David Miller when they stumbled upon a company that was importing a few products from Italy, and of them, some of the products were gluten-free. The concept of Gluten-free food intrigued Steven and they started researching it. They studied the details and explored the market of gluten-free products in Europe and other countries. 

While exploring, they found out that Europe was already taking baby steps in making gluten-free products. However, when they explored the American markets back then, there was practically nothing. They visualized an empty space in the gluten-free product market, which they thought to fill in immediately. With one idea, Steven started preparing for the launch of FodyFoods. The first Gluton free product brand in North America was established in 2016. 



Why did Steven focus on a low FODMAP gluten-free diet product? 

Steven always had a liking for food brands for special diets with medical benefits. Since he was working on building a gluten-free diet, the concept of a low FODMAP gluten-free diet instantly clicked on him. He got a paper about a low FODMAP diet some five years ago. After he reinvestigated the report, he found a similar initial craze as for a gluten-free diet. 

He then studied clinical trials and he had overwhelming data of people suffering from Gastro-Intestinal disease and bowel syndromes for whom this is the best diet plan.

They also are skeptical of the quality of food provided by the manufacturers. In such cases, yes it is true that Steven faces challenges to convince them to shift to a low FODMAP diet. 

He opines that everybody is different. Some take time to adjust to it while some switch immediately.
