The Evolution of Leadership: How Modern Leaders Are Shaping the Future in the Digital Age | OpenGrowth

Leadership is a complex curiosity. Seemingly woven into our DNA, this term has existed throughout the time we have spent on this planet. In the early days, we thought that great leaders were born, rather than created. Since then, we have come to know each other better. If we put our focus on the modern era in which we are living, leadership has shifted from a focus on an individual to considering an organization as a whole entity.

A solid sign of a great leader is to check if they leverage the tools and resources they have access to. Let’s take a look at how modern leaders function in this digitally advanced generation and how they are working to shape the future.

Adaptive Leadership Lessons Learned From Poker

Poker is a game we’re all familiar with. The table-top card game is immensely popular and is played worldwide. In the US alone, over 60 million poker players have been recorded.

This game can be accredited to contributing to the environment of online casinos. As you might be aware, in recent times online casinos have been gaining hype, which are replacing their traditional brick-and-mortar counterparts. Learn more about what is crypto gambling and how it has changed recently. This change to online casinos can also be thought of as being similar to digitization as people now play online instead of having to travel.

When we talk about poker, specifically about winning at the game, we immediately jump to forming strategies, thinking, and planning our next steps. The game is recognized as a mixture of skill and intuition, learned through years of experience. If you think about it, these elements of poker translate into leadership lessons that can be applied in real-life scenarios.

Just like in the online casino game, modern leaders need to find ways to ensure survival and victory over competition, think of any challenges and setbacks they may face along the way, and make calculated decisions to pull ahead in complex situations.

Another lesson we can learn is that we don’t play a hand of poker with emotion. We play in a mathematical, calculated manner. Similarly, modern leaders keep their emotions in check. They note their surroundings and make decisions based on available information.

Artificial Intelligence and Leadership

Artificial Intelligence is the latest digitization trend, changing how businesses function. The spread of AI has already started and will only gain further traction down the road.

The leaders of today are recognizing this as a tool to be used to innovate and grow further. One great benefit given by AI is its ability to work on large amounts of data and quickly analyze it to find insights. These can then be used for informed decision-making purposes. In addition to this, AI algorithms can also be used to generate ideas about new products and validate them.

AI does not wish to replace leaders with robots, rather it’s here to bring relief to us. Those who understand this will advance greatly. Think of all the mundane, repetitive tasks that need to be done. These can now be solved using AI models, cutting down costs and time.

Remote Work and Distributed Leadership

The COVID era saw the rise of remote work, and while the virus may be gone, the shift has stayed. There is a prominent increase in the number of employees who work from home or follow hybrid models.

A Forbes report states that in 2023, 12.7% of employees worked fully remotely, while 28.2% had hybrid approaches. It’s being predicted that by 2025, 32.6 million US citizens will be working remotely.

Due to this shift, modern leaders now have to recognize that these virtual teams need different management styles and strategies suited to them. As an example, authoritarian styles might not work due to the need for trust, while democratic may keep employees engaged better.

For remote work to be successful, leaders need to engage in open communication and use the digital tools calibrated for such tasks. One of these is Zoom, the popular video communication platform that has dedicated resources to allow for enhanced communication.

Ethical Leadership in the Digital Era

With the digital era advancing, it is imminent that leaders take note of ethical standards and follow these practices. Major concerns of today are related to the use of new technologies like artificial intelligence which raise questions of data privacy.

Modern leaders today need to make sure that their organizations are using this new tech responsibly and safely. They should also understand the risks associated and try to keep these at a minimum. An extract from a Harvard Business Review publication states that leaders need to explicitly identify their ethical nightmares that result from new technologies.

Wrapping Up

The digital age has changed how leaders partake in their leadership duties while adapting to new technologies. They are presented with challenges and trials they must overcome to ensure their businesses and organizations prosper. As we make the jump to even greater advancements, it’s clear that leadership qualities will evolve as well.
