"The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand
Alisa Rosenbaum was born to a Jewish family in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg. The Rosenbaums had to leave for Crimea after the Bolsheviks requisitioned the pharmacy owned by her father. Alisa returned to the city to attend the: University, but in 1926, she was asked to join her relatives who lived in America and she soon moved there. She went to Hollywood where she learned English. Here she wrote through the night on screenplays and novels.
Her first accomplishment was The Fountainhead. She had her philosophy which she named ‘Objectivism’ which was much appreciated then. Her follow-up novel Atlas Shrugged (1957) describes a group who strive to escape America's conspiracy of mediocrity.
Must Read: Book Review: Influence by Robert Cialdini
About the Book:
The Fountainhead gives you a time travel back in the 20s-30s New York and is based on the struggle of a free mind, creativeness, and individualism (all symbolized in Roark) against the common opinion, "second-handers", people who think only about what other people believe.
This modern classic is the story of a young designer Howard Roark, whose integrity was as unyielding as the granite of Dominique Francon, the exquisitely beautiful woman who liked Roark passionately. The story takes a turn when she had to marry his worst enemy and of the fanatic denunciation declared by an annoying society against a great producer. As fresh today as it was then, Rand’s stimulating novel presents one of the most demanding ideas in all of the fiction on—that man’s ego is the fountainhead of human improvement.
The theme, as Ayn Rand states it, is individualism versus collectivism, not in politics but men's souls. The book is about the confrontation between those who think for themselves and those who enable others to dominate their lives. According to Ayn Rand, the goal of her writing is the presentation of a suitable man.
