No, the title of this post is not at all inspired by the Thanos final dialogue in Avengers: Endgame. Okay, it is. There I said it. Happy? Nevermind, I chose that path simply because just like the Marvel universe, here I will be covering a similar fictional universe, i.e., Metaverse.
Ever since the day, the first Matrix movie hit the theatres and the popular Ernest Cline’s science fiction novel set in the dystopia made it to the silver screens recently, people have been manifesting signs of a virtual world akin to the real one in which we live in. Even many tech giants are working towards creating this metaverse and have been partly successful in it as well. Moreover, the global shift caused due to the covid-19 pandemic has only pushed us to believe that we are now closer to this possibility than we ever have been.
So, we have had a sort of tete a tete with the idea of a fictional universe that is being called a Metaverse. But what is metaverse and how the pandemic has played a role in furthering its possibility?
What is a Metaverse?
Metaverse is the OASIS that’s been talked about in the movie smash hit Steven Spielberg’s movie Ready Player One. For those who haven’t watched either the movie or have read the book, the movie showcases a dystopia future set in the year 2045. Here, with the help of virtual reality (VR) devices can join a virtual universe where they could do almost anything, except maybe for feeding their hungry belly, sleeping, and using a restroom. In more definite words, the metaverse is a collectively shared virtually augmented reality space where one can interact and do things in their imagined or designed form such as an avatar.
Several tech giants and experts believe that while the movie showed a metaverse set in 2045, in reality, we will not have to wait for that long. Even it has been predicted that the VR that now has a soft impact globally will receive a huge boon once the metaverse becomes a reality.
How is the Pandemic Increasing the Possibility of the Metaverse?
Before the pandemic rattled us, the entire world had a vastly different way of doing things. Classes were held in schools and universities, meetings took place inside a conference room, and people were able to drive to their near and dear ones whenever they wanted to. However, in March 2020 when the world witnessed the first outbreak of the coronavirus in China and acknowledged it to be a severe threat, things changed. First, everything went to a standstill and gradually people started making their moves.
Regular classes became online classes, meetings were held in a virtual conference, birthday parties and wedding celebrations were done through zoom and the list just goes on and on. Also, with the major outlets such as shopping malls, theatres, and sports avenues being completely shut down during the pandemic and is having trouble reviving it completely to its full potential are pushing for online digital environments to seek out business and growth. Overall, the current situation has created an urgency for brands and artists, schools, and workplaces to build towards a virtual experience where they do things the way they were doing in the real world without being in each other's physical proximity.

Meta-Expectation-Verse in 2021
Throughout 2021, the metaverse is expected to grow widespread in various fields. It will look to become the human co-experience utility where they can meet in the virtual world not just play games but to do other things such as watch movies together or check out any user-generated videos. Education is likely to translate into a more immersive experience where students from learning to code online can move to learn about biology and physics through simulations inside the virtual classroom. Similarly, there will be more gaming events hosted online and even companies will look to create virtual spaces where their co-workers can interact with each other.
Metaverse is going to be the shot in the arm of the virtual reality (VR) based application and sooner we can witness it to exceed even our wildest imaginations starting with completely immersive 3D experiences and the ability of the people to recreate parts of their real world such as homes, cities, and playground, etc. Thus, causing a larger shift towards how we were used to living till now. So, expect a wild and most probably fun ride in the years to come because the metaverse is certainly inevitable and coming sooner than we had expected.
