Privacy is the biggest concern of this technological world. There have been many cases of privacy around the world. Even big brands, like Facebook and WhatsApp, have been accused of violating their user's privacy. Keeping in mind the privacy and consent of users, Twitter has made a solid move on image ownership.
What is the move of Twitter?
Twitter has banned posting images of people without their consent. It means the photos will be removed if the photographer has not obtained consent before sharing them on Twitter.
The individual who found the image shared online without permission can report it to Twitter, and then Twitter will decide whether it has to be taken down or not. The move is an indication of the protection of an individual’s privacy.
The Reason behind the move
Twitter decided it in response to “ growing concerns about the misuse of media and information that is not available elsewhere to harass, intimidate, and reveal the identities of individuals.”
Twitter's policy change is a pragmatic solution that gives people more control over how their images are used. This can be especially useful for security reasons for groups identified by Twitter, including women, activists, and members of minorities.
The Teething issues
There were some teething problems within a week of the policy launching. But later, Twitter said it had corrected the errors and launched an internal review.
There are also concerns that the policy could harm minority groups if they struggle to share images that depict harassment or injustice. But, Twitter says such events will be excluded from the rules because they are newsworthy; it is not yet clear how this will be enforced.
One thing that should be noted is that this is not a blanket ban on images of individuals. “The images showing people participating in public events such as protests or events will not violate the policy,” said Twitter.
